Since I have started reading about Human Resource Management I have always been a great admirer of Theory Y by Douglas McGregor stating: “Employees team may be ambitious, self-motivated, and anxious to accept greater responsibility, and exercise self-control, self-direction, autonomy and empowerment. It is believed that employees enjoy their mental and physical work duties. [3]” I have been very optimistic about the role of all the organizational members and considering this I have believed that there is a chance for greater productivity by giving employees the freedom to perform at the best of their abilities without being bogged down by rules. For me Theory X by Douglas McGregor has been a very unrealistic approach which states:
“Employees are inherently lazy and will avoid work if they can. Because of this, workers need to be closely supervised and comprehensive systems of controls developed.”
Now when after my IPM experience and working as a part of a variety of teams, completing different task I have come to realize that I have been rather extra optimistic. It has to be combination of both X and Y approach in order to run the process of management and specially project management smoothly. As there are deadlines to meet and a lot of responsibilities to fill, there is less room to consider that all the team members would 100% fulfill their specific tasks. Human resource should not be forced and pushed to the wall but it cannot be let free and a close monitoring and evaluation system must be in place to assess the durability, especially in the project world it is very important. |
